You cannot wait for autumn to photograph the tree though trees look attractive in autumn.
What you can take for your photography
What kind of lenses do you want to use? It depends upon totally up to you. The lenses vary from wide angle to shorter telephotos. You are free to use compact camera also. Please take a strong camera stand as you may get insufficient light in forest. If you are going for a long travel you should take a bag that has multiple pockets and enough space so that you can take all the essential things with you.
Target the woods
Trees are not rare. They are available on our roads and garden. The tree beside your house cannot be a good object at all. You must go outside for better snaps. Though woods are good specimen for photography but you can not use tripod in all gardens or site. So at first you have to know about the place before carrying the tripod. If you want to take shots of a group of trees, it is better to take the entire view by stepping backward. You can also take a portion for artistic view.
Select a suitable time
Light is an important factor in photography. Low light and high bright light is not good. So it is better to start early or wait for the sun goes down slightly. Without some special case a cloudy day is not preferable for photography at all.
Add texture and select the proper pattern
When you are at mid forest it is convenient to take close snap of a single tree. You should focus the trunk and at the same tilt up to get a view with some texture.
Including artificial things
If you take some man made things in your coverage area it will enhance the beauty of your photography. But the color of the object should match with the soft nature.
Go to leaves
It is better to give attention to leaves and canopy area in a clear sky. Blue sky acts as a distinct background of green leaves and you can go into more deeper position of leaves like veins. Please don,t take a snap of chewed leaves that is affected by the bugs. If you need more detailed snaps, I suggest you to take coupling rings or an extension tube on double lenses but in case of closer photography use a 100 mm lens.
If you want a shiny and distinct work, please avoid the thicker leaves and same patterned leaves.
