Identifying Risk Factors Of Workplace Violence

By Franklin Skribbit

The subject of becoming a better employee is taken by most with a grain of salt. There are those who hear the phrase "be a better employee" and immediately get defensive with the retort "become a better employer first."

Or there are those who think of the brown nosing ladder climber in the cubical next to them and think to themselves "I'd rather be stuck here than become that guy."

There are several different behaviors that constitute sexual harassment. One of the main ones is unwanted sexual advances. This could be a man or a woman flirting excessively with another man or woman, or making any other sexual advances that are not returned. If they are requesting sexual favors, this is also considered sexual harassment.

Becoming a better employee is not all about giving off a good image to one's higher-ups, although, unfortunately for some, no matter what else a person does they will most likely have to play the game a little bit before they can see some real progress in their career.

It is important to keep in mind that people do not always reflect on the outside what is going on in their brains on the inside. This is why, if you are working in a high-risk environment, it is important to be watchful, careful, and cautious while you are on the job.

Sometimes a man will harass a man, or a woman will harass another woman. It is important to not turn a blind eye to sexual harassment occurring just because it is not occurring in the usual and expected fashion.

The first step to becoming a better employee is to develop an attitude or a productive and positive nature. No matter one's personal feelings towards a direct superior, the specific tasks of the job, or even the company as a whole.

It is important to remember that a person can decide for themselves how their attitude will shape their everyday lives (or in other words, it is your life and it is your work, so take some pride in both and let all other factors fall to the wayside)

This could include people sitting around the harasser or victim when the sexual harassment is occurring. If any bystanders feel uncomfortable and feel that they are in a hostile environment, they are victims of sexual harassment as well.

Online compliance training, additional course work, or even additional degrees can all paly an effective role in improving the quality of employee a person is.

Something you can do to help decrease the amount of workplace violence that occurs is to make sure that when employees leave your company, they do not take any identification or access codes with them. If they have access to the building where they used to work, they could use that access for things that are not honorable.

Doing this in this kind of well-lit area will make it so the harasser does not act out irrationally and do something inappropriate. Employees of every company should be given sexual harassment training where they learn how to prevent sexual harassment and what to do if they see it happening in their workplace.

By increasing focus, training, and by understanding that one's attitude at work will make all the difference, an employee can become an asset to their company and achieve the success they desire.
