The Way The World Gets Georgia Pecans

By Rena Hudson

For hundreds of years the pecan has been at the center of enjoyment. The first tree to grow these delicious nuts in the US was planted in 1772. By the early 19th century, pecans had become a big industry in the US. The state of Georgia is the lead in the countrys production of the nut and do more than half of all production for the US. The reason for this is that they have the best environment for these nuts to grow. Georgia pecans are popular all over the world.

On average, the trees can get 70 to 100 feet tall. Normally each limb sprout around 9 to 15 leaflets. The nuts grow in clusters of 2 to 6 nuts per each cluster. Each single nut has its own shell on it that splits in 4 directions when the nuts are ripe.

The production of the trees depends upon age. A lot of things can attack crops such as bothersome disease and even pests. Good production from the younger trees could be around 50 pounds, but mature trees are able to produce about 150 pounds of pecans during one season.

Over the past decade, research has been done in order to find out what the exact nutrition of the nut is. When you have a lot of them in your diet it has been proven you will have health benefits. These benefits are lower blood pressure and cholesterol. You will most likely experience better weight control as well.

During the course of a study conducted at the University of Massachusetts pecans were fed to mice. Those with more of the nuts in their diet seemed to do the best. It was found that the vitamin E found in them, provided neurological protection against the effects brain cell depletion. These nuts could be vital in fighting diseases like Alzheimers and Parkinsons. They are also a source of 19 total vitamins and minerals. They are also one of the top foods with the highest number of antioxidants found in them.

So that they keep up with supply demands, America has begun to rely on Mexico for imported nuts. Mexico has the ability to produce very high quality pecans. Their trees and conditions actually surpass those of Georgia. Mexicos production has has picked up and more because of the demand by the US for their nuts so that they can keep up with their countrys demands. America needs more nuts than ever because of the fact that they are now doing the same as Mexico and shipping their nuts all over the world.

The nuts are harvested in Georgia during the fall months, they are available all year long. Many Georgia farmers offer their homegrown pecans online and they can be purchased and shipped twenty four hours a day. Since there have been so many production advances over the past few decades, the amount of shelled ones available each season has increased making availability that much higher.

The rise in prices due to shipping has caused pecans to become a highly stolen item throughout Georgia. Upwards around 1400 pounds of nuts have been stole from just one orchard. People will go to any length to have those delicious Georgia pecans.
