Identifying When to Have Your Brakes and Tires Checked

By Maryl Joop

Unless you live in a big city, chances are that you own a car and drive this car to get to most of your destinations. These destinations could include work, school, and places to buy food and clothes.

Insurance companies determine the cost of the premiums they charge depending upon the risk they incur by taking on the client. Insurance studies have shown that the demographic of young drivers under the age of twenty five are the most risky to insure because of the likelihood that they have to get into accidents and file claims with their insurance company.

That's the brake pad. Take out a ruler and figure out how large of an inch looks like, and then eyeball how big you think the pad is. If it's thin then you need to have them checked out. If you hear strange sounds and feel grinding or pulling to the left or right, those are also indications of a much needed brake check.

These facts can be startling, but as drivers of cars it is important that we realize the risks involved when we get behind the wheel. Therefore, it is very important to drive defensively at all times in order to minimize the risk of getting into an accident.

A young driver can prove that they are a safe driver by having a clean record. A clean record can instantly lower the insurance costs for insuring a young driver's vehicle and can continue to lower them with time through building up a no-claims bonus or discount that most insurance companies offer to their customers.

Newer tires have been manufactured with a "tread wear indicator bar." These are pieces of rubber that run perpendicular to the tread. When new, these bars are barely visible. As they wear down, they become increasingly visible. When you can see multiple of them clearly, it's time to go get those tires checked out. Aside from the just the tread itself, check the sidewall often for cracks.

And if an accident does occur, it will most likely be your fault. Try to calm down when you're driving and realize that being first in line or being ahead of everyone else is not worth the risk to your safety. If you are not an aggressive driver, then good for you. Try to stay out of the way of aggressive drivers and just let them pass you. If they want to get in an accident, so be it. But it won't be with you.

By having a low powered engine and a good safety rating on the car, a young driver will be able to receive lower insurance costs because the risk of getting in an accident is lowered. In general, a young driver should steer clear of the fast and sporty cars and choose instead the safer and slower cars.
