Learn How to Swap Out Front Wheel Bearings

By Fred Gagnon

Even when the bearings are not developing a noise it is always a great idea to have them checked out every 30,000 miles. Get all your tools and supplies together before beginning and permit enough time to complete the job.

Please remember that these are basic details and check out the right repair manual for your automobile. Always think safety before anything else each time you're doing work around machinery. Use safety glasses to cover your eyes and stay away from hot items, sharp items and dangerous materials. It is vital never to work on a vehicle that is only held up by a jack, always set up a strong support below the vehicle to forestall it from going down on you.

At this point on sanitation is vital. You don't wish any dust, sand or metal chips in the hub.

1. Take off your disc brake calipers and caliper bridge to eradicate the rotor.

2. Take out the bearing cap. This is usually a press fit and to eliminate it snap it up with your channelocks and work it backward and forward until it pops off. Do not destroy it.

3. The moment the cap is off you will find a cotter pin, take off the cotter pin and take off the retainer ring. If your car has a castellated nut, you won't use a retaining ring.

4. With your channelocks or varying wrench, take off the nut from the spindle.

5. Afterwards take off the outer wheel bearing and washer.

6. Glide the rotor or drum away from the spindle.

7. Eradicate the grease seal and pull out the interior wheel bearing.

8. Get rid of all the old grease within the hub.

9. Take out the bearing races from the hub.

10. Use a punch with a flat narrow tip and set it on the rear of the race.

11. Touch the race out, changing from laterally so it slides out evenly and does not get cocked in the hub.

12. The moment it's out, switch the rotor or drum over and perform the same for another race.

13. Clean the inner of the hub with some rags.

14. Be sure the spindle is clean also.

As described above spend some time and you won't get exasperated.
